Artist Statement
While I have been creating this series I can’t help but think of the metaphor comparing postpartum motherhood to a flamingo “getting its pink back.” Supposedly after giving birth, female flamingos lose their pink coloring for a season before eventually gaining their color back.
Many mothers have found themselves identifying with this concept, and shew so do I! Whether physically, mentally, or emotionally, I am still in a season (11 months postpartum) where I am slowly gaining pieces of myself back. Including regaining my ability to be creative.
While these pieces of art aren’t specifically derived from that concept, I have been sitting with this sense as I have been creating them. Layer by layer, with pinks and reds, slowly regaining and learning new pieces of myself as I create.
Whether it’s motherhood or any other major or collective adjustment you’re navigating I hope these pieces of art serve as a reminder that you will find yourself again. The challenge is to greet and gently embrace all these new pieces that have been birthed from this and subsequent seasons.
